The Society holds colloquia in the spring and autumn on epigraphic themes: the BES Autumn Colloquium is organised by the Society's Secretary and is usually held in London; the BES Spring Meeting is hosted by another institution or organisation in agreement with the Society. We also promote the study of inscriptions through summer schools and workshops which offer the chance to get "hands-on" experience in studying epigraphic material - typically in a museum context. Moreover, we keep in touch with subscribers through regular e-mail announcements, at least twice a month (except for August when the Society takes its peregrinatio), giving notices of forthcoming events, news of recent discoveries, and reports on BES-supported activities; and we provide up-to-date information, via this website, on epigraphic training and summer schools in and outwith the UK: more information on our 'Events'-page!
Last, but not least, the Society is especially eager to foster interest in epigraphy among students, and each year we make available a number of generous bursaries to assist with the costs of attending epigraphic workshops and conferences: see our 'Support'-page for more information!
The objectives of the Society can be summarised thus:
· to raise the profile of epigraphic research in the British Isles
· to establish better contacts between scholars with similar interests in different parts of the British Isles
· to disseminate news of discoveries and activities - both national and international - of interest to its members
· to increase public awareness of epigraphy and its contribution, particularly in schools
· to establish regular meetings both within the British Isles and with scholars from other countries
· to promote the study and teaching of epigraphy, and in particular the training of graduate students, both by direct action, and also by pressing for proper resources to help spread information about collections of squeezes, photographs etc. and encourage their use to encourage collaborative field-work projects, particularly with a training element to encourage the development of new forms of publication.
